You'd probably be a fool not to take advantage of 1and1.com's free web hosting for 3 years deal. The plan they are offering is pretty decent, and normally costs $29/month: 500MB space, 5GB/mo traffic ($0.99/GB over that), PHP, MySQL, Perl, 50 POP3 email accounts, and 50 subdomains.

The registration process is totally automated and only took us about 10 minutes (you have to wait for a phone call, and then an email, etc), and at no time are you asked to provide a credit card number (it really is free).

The company seems generally recommended by everyone we hear from, although we've been cautioned against using them to register domains for you (supposedly they will only point those domains at their own servers, making it difficult for you to switch hosts and keep domains).

According the the promotion FAQ, there are no hidden charges, you're free to cancel at any time, and the promotion runs until January 14, 2004.
