Mozilla Firefox 0.9

This post is more than two years old. It might be still-relevant and maybe even awesome, but it's probably outdated (and likely embarassing!) Proceed with care.

You've probably already heard, but Mozilla Firefox 0.9 was released today (with 1.0 coming not too far behind... see the Roadmap). A few helpful things about the release and our observations:

  • We reserved public judgement until today on the new default theme (Winstripe), but were initially (and still are) very dissapointed about the decision to abandon Qute. Now after having used Winstripe in 0.9 for most of today, we're suprised at how little the change really matters. It isn't nearly as nice (or polished) as Qute, but so long as there are some decent improvements in the coming builds, we think it will all work out okay. If the switch had to be done, the earlier the better. (Qute is thankfully still available)
  • As usual, the mozillazine forums are the place to go for information. Useful threads include: Tutorial: How to upgrade to firefox 0.9 and Help! I can't install themes! Be sure to read that first one if upgrading... and be sure to backup your old profile.
  • If you're wondering what's new in 0.9 that you can't live without, Jesse Ruderman has a nice list of new features and bugfixes. Simple things like the ability to drag text to the address bar and do a search, drag a URL and have the browser "go there", and the new "Set as Wallpaper" dialog are what makes Firefox great.
